Portugal: How I Fell in Love with Madeira Island, the Pearl of the Atlantic

Madeira Island, a great surprise!

Madeira Island is one of the most beautiful and diverse destinations in Portugal and I have been lucky enough to visit this subtropical island twice. It has friendly people, stunning landscapes and delicious cuisine.

Madeira Island is a gem in the middle of the Atlantic. It’s amazing how such a tiny place can have the nicest of people, hills that will make you wonder whether the car will make it or not and breath-taking sunsets.

I have numerous favorite spots and it’s just incredible how diverse the landscape is. You can stroll in the green woods, hike the desertic Ponta de São Lourenço and visit a volcano all in the same day.

The hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is unquestionably the best hike I have ever done and it’s totally worth it. I went proper tourist here and tried all the typical stuff: espetada, espada com banana, picado (favorite), poncha, passion fruit pudding and bolo do caco. I can’t wait to go back!
